Information obtained at ESEA/NCLB conference in Chicago IL in February 2011

Common Core Standards (CCS) session provided update and overview for administrators on the new standards and what is underway.
· Illinois is part of the PARCC consortium.

· Teaching translates to learning. Items will be relevant to the real world and will be based on success in college and careers
· Have been established by “what they do not know” and working backwards
· Assessments will measure the growth of individual kids
· ELA (English Language Arts) will concentrate on synthesizing, evaluating etc.

o In grades 9-12 the standards are in 2-year bands, including:
§ Reading
§ Writing
§ Speaking- there is more emphasis on presentation of information
§ Language/Literacy
· Math core standards will have an additional 8 practices that need to be done
o Algebra 1 moves to 8th grade
· Reports that are being used as studies
o Time to Act (Adolescent Literacy)

· Testing of CCS will be performance based instead of multiple choice; there will be written persuasive essays; there will be a computer based element.

o Computer enhanced/scored portion
· Core is based on Vygotski’s model of learning, specifically “zone of proximal development” (ZPD) http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/5075 and
· Bloom’s Taxonomy- goes from Knowledge, Comprehension, Application to Analysis, Synthesis, Evaluation
· Keystone standards
o Assessed 3 times during the year and once at the end. Results should come within 2 weeks.
· Crosswalk- term means to see how old ISBE standards apply to the new standards CCS. The following website on the Survey of Enacted Curriculum gives visual comparison of how curriculum should shift. http://seconline.wceruw.org/secWebHome.htm You can register as a guest and view contour maps.
One School’s timeline:
· Pre- implementation
o Board Awareness
o Staff Awareness- gathered teams and reviewed documents. Began doing some sampling of tasks—In January the school has three years to get there.
· Phase I- Standards and resource alignment
o Decide “who” was doing what
o Align the CCS to the IAF (Framework) and do a gap analysis. There are district templates in the PowerPoint.
o Identify existing resources that support teaching and learning.
o Decide what professional development is needed
§ 21st Century thinking and tech integration
§ Balanced literacy and numeracy (may not be applicable in the HS setting)
§ Differentiation
o Used SharePoint to catalogue resources
· Phase II- Instruction and Resource Alignment
